From the Diary of an Adoptive Mother
"She's SO beautiful!", comes a comment from a complete stranger while we are out to dinner. They are gushing over our babies beautiful dark curly hair and her big blue eyes. She smiles up at them, flirting for sure. They don't walk away. They are just standing there transfixed. Smiling at this gorgeous little girl. Then they look at me. Smile politely, but I can see the question in their eyes. They are wondering where her olive skin and dark hair comes from. Next they turn to Daddy. There's the smile again. But, they feel closer to an explanation because his hair is so dark and wavy. "She must take after her dad," says the women. I smile politely, "Yes, she must." Do I need to say, "She's adopted! She get's that beautiful skin from her birth parents." What is the proper thing to do? I'm not ashamed by any means on how this blessing came into our lives. I want our children to love, accept, and cherish how they came to be in our family. But, for today, and for all strangers out there who love to look at our pretty baby. Thank you. That's all I can say right now. Thank you for thinking she's beautiful. Thank you for not asking the question I see in your eyes. She is beautiful!

Okay.....we (strangers) are INEPT. We are drawn to a beautiful baby like they are magnets. Then we (the inept stranger) want to say something profound! "Beautiful baby". Then we (still very inept stranger) realize that we are now in an awkward postition-talking to complete strangers. And now ever so quickly somehow, our foot is quickly inserted into our mouth and we say something stupid before we realize our foot is even there. Then we have to make a quick get away, before you realize that we ave lost all ability to speak. She is Beautiful! Just smile at us, and agree.
Nancy is right, I bet the very inept strangers walk away thinking 'Why did I just say that?'. Where would the world be without adopting mommies and daddies, bless you every one!
PS I LOVE the 'bum', 'turtle' 'standing' and 'shoes' pictures!
